Rainy Connections Affect Deer Movement

Weather plays a big role in determining when deer move, but how big in relation to other factors? Is it worth it to hunt when it's raining? Do deer move better just before or just after a frontal passage?

whitetailDavid Hale may not know all the answers to these questions, but he's certainly got opinions about them. You might recognize Hale as one of the co-founders of Knight & Hale Game Calls. Hale is a master deer hunter, and he's always aware of conditions that might make deer move better.

The weather question to pose this expert is all about rain. Is it good or poor timing to be on the stand?

"If the moon is right, if it's raining, its cooler," he observes. "If it's misting, I like to be there. If it's a pour down, deer don't move around. If it's an all day rain, I'm gone to the house. If it's been a prolonged period of rain, I think yes, it is a good time to be there. If it's a quick scenario, I don't think its going to make much of a difference. I think it's extremely important to hunt whitetail deer prior to the front's arrival, because the deer want to hurry up and feed, so I want to take advantage of that."
