Here's a good suggestion for a summer vacation for couples who like to fish together: head to Montana and book a float-fishing trip for trout on one of this state's fabled rivers. The scenery is beautiful, the air is pure, and the fish are usually biting. This is where you can truly experience your own version of "A River Runs Through It."
Tony Schooner lives in Missoula, Montana, and he's flyfished and guided on this state's rivers since he was a young boy. He says visitors have a treat in store when they book a guide for a day of fishing for big brown and rainbow trout.
"Montana has some phenomenal trout fishing both in terms of rivers and lakes. The trout populations here are doing very well even though we have had probably two decades of drought."
Schooner continues, "My dad started an outfitting business in 1958. My brother runs it today. What we've seen in the last 10-15 years has been a tremendous surge in interest in flyfishing. ‘A River Runs Through It' came out and the flood gates opened, and here came the people!"
He adds, "There's a huge interest among women now in flyfishing. We're seeing the age drop from older folks coming to flyfish to younger folks coming to fish. So that's a good thing. Flyfishing is a good healthy outdoor activity for people of all ages."
Tony Schooner's favorite months for Montana trout fishing are June, July and September.
He said people wanting to learn more should go online and Google "Montana trout fishing." They will find many references on outfitters, lodges, fly shops and other sources of information.
