No where on Earth can you find as many playas as in the Southern High Plains. The wetlands are unique to the region with more than 60,000 in a six-state area of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Playas are the most abundant and ecologically important wetlands in the region. They are the primary source of recharge for the Ogallala Aquifer and support millions of migratory waterfowl and other birds along the Central Flyway. Yet despite these benefits, playas remain critically threatened wetlands and are fading from the landscape faster than people can even learn they exist.
In an effort to raise awareness and conservation of these vital wetlands, the Playa Lakes Joint Venture (PLJV) has produced “The Playas - Reflections of Life on the Plains,” a 30-minute educational film about the wetlands. The PLJV is a non-profit, non-partisan partnership of wildlife and agriculture agencies, local and national sportsmen and conservation groups, businesses and private landowners dedicated to preserving playas, other wetlands and grasslands in the Southern High Plains for the benefit of birds, other wildlife and people. This film is available on DVD or VHS for the low price of $5.95 to cover shipping and handling. To order a copy, visit pljv.org. |
