RING-NECKED PHEASANT

The ring-necked pheasant, which became the state bird of South Dakota, is commonly found in agriculture farmlands with crops of corn, wheat, oats, barley or hay, or areas with grasslands mixed with small woodlands. Pheasant is a popular midwestern game bird, drawing hunters from across the nation each fall season.

Walk-in for Late Season Pheasant

Most pheasant hunting takes place in the early season, and later in the season most hunters have turned their attention to deer and waterfowl and other game. This leaves some real opportunity for those hardy bird hunters who're still persisting.

The pheasant may be a little smarter and in a little thicker cover. But hunters who're willing to work for their pheasant roosters can have some super hunting in the latter season, especially if they have some good bird dogs.

Outdoor writer and broadcaster Ron Schara of Minneapolis says one of the best latter season opportunities exists in South Dakota, where there's an abundance of public walk-in areas.

"You are invited to walk-in to these areas, often CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) areas," he says. "Most of them are teeming with pheasants. If you just go to a county courthouse, buy your license there, ask for a walk-in area map and know where you're going, if you can read a map, you can hunt pheasants."
