Salamonie River Offers Forestry Field Day

An educational forestry field day will be offered at Indiana's Salamonie River State Forest, Sunday, October 26, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Indiana Department of Natural Resources district foresters Tim Eizinger and Brad Rody, along with several other resource professionals, will preside.

Tours of a portion of the state forest's new 56-acre plantation will be given. The area was planted this spring on property purchased with Indiana Heritage Trust Funds. The planting was made possible by a partnership between the Indiana Hardwood Foundation, Armstrong Industries, the Indiana Forest and Woodland Owners Association, and the DNR Division of Forestry.

Those participating will make stops in woodlands planted in the late 1920s by young men enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); view part of an upcoming marked harvest of over-mature, damaged and dying trees; and learn about emerald ash borer and other invasive species of insects, trees, and shrubs.

A short walk via flat trail, past Hominy Ridge Lake, to the historic CCC Shelterhouse will take participants to a fireside talk about the Salamonie River CCC Camp led by interpretive naturalist Teresa Rody. Participants can enjoy refreshments and ask questions about forestry topics before leaving the field day.

Advance registration to participate is required. Call (260) 782-0430, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., before Oct. 24.
