Jekyll Island Fishing Area Getting Upgraded |
|
JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — A popular fishing area on Jekyll Island is getting a new look.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, in partnership with the Jekyll Island Authority, has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Fish America Foundation. The money will be used to improve Ski Rixen Pond, a 23-acre manmade saltwater fishing site.
The money is being used to install an aeration system in the pond to improve water quality during summer and to create fish habitat.
Work on the project began Friday.
In 2001, the state Department of Natural Resources built two fishing piers near the pond to encourage recreational fishing.
The latest project is an extension of a push by the DNR and the Jekyll Island Authority to create additional fishing and recreational opportunities on the island. |
