October 8, 2009 - Frankfort, Kentucky - Learn the basics of deer hunting and deer processing during a series of free programs for hunters and outdoors enthusiasts at the Salato Wildlife Education Center from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, October 17. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced hunter, this program will help you achieve a successful deer season.

The first program begins at 10:30 a.m. with a demonstration on deer processing led by a conservation officer with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Pre-registration is not required for this demonstration, and we encourage you to ask questions. Stay around afterwards for a demonstration of hide tanning to preserve the deer hide.

At 1 p.m., you can get advice from a department biologist on where to hunt, tips in the field and tree stand safety. At 2 p.m., take part in our tracking program to increase your skill for those times when the perfect shot didn't happen. No registration required for any of these programs.

The Salato Center has a variety of native animals for the public to see, including a black bear, bobcats, elk, deer, bison, eagles, snakes and fish. The Center has numerous indoor exhibits and miles of hiking trails open to the public. Fishing is available at two lakes. While some programs may require a registration fee, general admission to the Salato Center is free.

The Salato Center, operated by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, is located at the department's headquarters on U.S. 60 in Frankfort, 1.5 miles west of U.S. 127. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The Center is closed Sundays, Mondays and state holidays.
