Wildlife Council Approves Ohio's Early Migratory Bird Season |

Columbus, Ohio (ODNR)- The Ohio Wildlife Council has approved the state's
early migratory bird hunting seasons for this fall, according to the
Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
September 1 will kick off the state's hunting seasons with the
opening of dove, Canada goose, rail, moorhen, teal and snipe. Squirrel
hunting season also starts that day.
Ohio's dove-hunting season runs September 1 through October 14 and
November 10 through November 25, with a daily limit of 15 birds and a
possession limit of 30 birds.

Steve Kennedy Holds Lead in Bassmaster Elite Series Event |

PLATTSBURGH, NY (Bass Communications)- Steve Kennedy traveled as far south as he could
go Thursday on Lake Champlain and the long trip was worth it: The
Auburn, Ala., angler caught a 21-pound, 6-ounce limit to hold a 4-ounce
lead over Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., after the first day of
the Bassmaster Elite Series Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota
Tundra.
The Champion’s Choice presented by Toyota Tundra will be
aired on The Bassmasters at 9 a.m. ET July 21 on ESPN2. The eighth
event of the Elite Series season will end Sunday with a $100,000 prize
for the winner.
Kennedy, last year’s Toyota Rookie of the Year on
the Elite Series, scored his first career win earlier this year at

Forest Service aims to fight fire with new tools |

WASHINGTON - With an intense fire season under
way, the U.S. Forest Service is employing some new tools and strategies
to fight wildfires in the West, said Marc Rounsaville, the agency's
deputy director for fire and aviation management.
In a
wide-ranging interview Monday, Rounsaville said indexes show the
wildfire season is running two to three weeks ahead of schedule in some
parts of the West. The most recent updates show an above-normal
potential for fire during the next 30 days in southwestern Montana.

Ocean salmon season starts with a bang in Washington |

(WDFW)- Ocean salmon fishing got off to a strong start during the first week in July
along the Washington coast, where many anglers went home with two-fish limits.
Coho made up the bulk of the catch in most areas, although anglers fishing off
Westport have also been catching good numbers of chinook salmon averaging about
18 pounds apiece.
"This fishery is off to the best start we've seen in several years," said
Doug Milward, ocean salmon manager for the Washington Department of Fish and
Wildlife (WDFW). "The fish are good-sized, and anglers are catching them all
along the coast."
On the southern coast, Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco) is open daily for salmon
fishing, while Marine Area 2 (Westport) is open Sundays through Thursdays. On

Maryland Sends Firefighters To Battle Nevada Wildfire |

Annapolis, Maryland (MDNR)— Twenty Maryland firefighters travel to Jackpot,
Nevada on Wednesday to combat a 63,000 acre wildfire on federal public
lands. The firefighters will be working to contain the Eccles and West
Basin brush and grass fires near the Bureau of Land Management's Elko
Field Office. At this time only about 45 percent of the wildfire has
been contained, leaving six homes still threatened by the wildfire.
"As the wildfire situation intensifies nationally, critical
resource shortages are beginning to occur in some areas," said Monte
Mitchell, MD DNR Forest Service State Fire Supervisor. "It is an honor
for Maryland to be able to send firefighters to help combat the
wildfire situation in those western states,"

OSHA Grants 60-day Extension |

and Health Administration's (OSHA) proposed regulations concerning
proposed explosives regulations, OSHA has decided to grant a 60-day
extension in which to submit additional comments on the proposed

Show, the proposal has been discussed and roundly criticized as posing
a serious threat to the firearms industry. The new deadline for

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Environmental Protection Agency has started an
investigation into whether cancer-causing radioactive material is still
buried near a rifle range at Camp Lejeune, the Marine Corps' primary
base on the Atlantic Ocean.
A Navy document dated May 22, 1981, said
the material included 160 pounds of soil and two animal carcasses laced
with strontium-90, an isotope that causes cancer of the bone and soft
tissue and leukemia.

Maribor, Slovenia (USA Shooting)- A Soldier of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit of Fort Benning, Ga., has won a Bronze Medal in the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup.
Two-time Olympian Pfc. Walton "Glenn" Eller III took home the Bronze Medal at the ISSF Shotgun Maribor World Cup July 3. In the Men's Double Trap competition, Eller was tied for fifth place going into the finals and shot a 47 finishing with a total score of 188 to claim the Bronze.

AUSTIN, Texas (TPWD)— With the passage of House Bill 12 by the 80th Texas Legislature, it is now unlawful to hunt any wild bird or animal on a public road or the right-of-way of a public road.
Prior to this year, it was unlawful to hunt game animals or game birds on a public road — meaning that nongame species such as snakes, turtles, frogs and most mammals other than deer, bighorn sheep, javelina, and pronghorn antelope could be legally taken, provided that the take was not by firearm and did not occur from a vehicle.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP)- A heat wave has warmed the Firehole River to as much as 82 degrees, killing hundreds of rainbow and brown trout.
Park officials noticed the kill Friday. Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash said temperatures above 73 degrees can be stressful or even fatal for trout.
He said the trout died within the previous three days.

OLYMPIA, WA (WDFW)- A special fishery for wheelchair-bound anglers opens today (July 7) at a new fishing site developed by Tacoma Power near the new outfall structure at the trout hatchery on the Cowlitz River.
The new fishing site, located within 100 feet of the Cowlitz Trout Hatchery outfall, is reserved for anglers who use a wheelchair. Those anglers must follow fishing rules in effect on the lower Cowlitz River.

CONCORD, N.H. (NHF&G)- The New Hampshire
Fish and Game Department's Lake Winnipesaukee Bass Tagging Study has
gotten off to a fast start, according to Gabe Gries, Fisheries
Biologist and Warmwater Project Leader.
Tagging at bass tournaments at Ames Farm Inn started on Saturday, June
30, when 95 largemouth and smallmouth bass were tagged at the Bubba
Bassin' tournament. On Sunday, July 1, 198 bass were tagged at the
Massachusetts Bass Federation tournament. A tournament angler at the
Sunday event caught a largemouth bass that had been tagged on Saturday.
This is the first tagged bass caught during the study.
"I can't believe a tagged bass was caught so quickly and after only 95 bass had been tagged, " said Gries.
