(SCDNR)- The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has received reports of more than 140 dead or sick greater shearwaters, a gull-like bird, since Tuesday along the entire South Carolina coast. This die-off is affecting the entire southeast coast. The birds are primarily greater shearwaters, but other species have been reported.
    DNR biologists are examining the dead birds to investigate the cause. With several hundred dead birds reported in Florida, there is the potential for hundreds to show up in South Carolina.

Iowa Man Drowned Print E-mail

OKOBOJI, IA (IDNR)– A Holstein man drowned Saturday evening after falling overboard from a boat on East Lake Okoboji.

Cody Schubert, 21, was not wearing a life jacket when he fell overboard shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday. The boat was being operated at idle speed in approximately 10-12 feet of water along the east shoreline at the time of the incident. There were five other passengers in the boat.

MISSOULA, MT- Montana and Wyoming were once the only states left in the lower 48 that had escaped an invasion of Eurasian water milfoil.

You can now officially scratch Montana from that list.


The invasive weed - which is capable of growing into mats thick enough to stop a boat - was recently discovered near two boat launches on Noxon Reservoir.

NEW BERLIN, WI (The Fishing Wire) - Minn Kota®, the oldest manufacturer of electric trolling motors in the world, has reached an agreement with DuraSafe, Inc. to exclusively sell the only trolling motor lock that fits the majority of Minn Kota transom mount motors including Endura™, Maxxum®, Vantage®, and E-Drive.

DuraSafe, of New Berlin, Wis., will manufacture the trolling motor lock under the new agreement with Minn Kota, according to Dan Bennett, product manager for the marine electronics group of Minn Kota's parent company, Johnson Outdoors, Inc.

The trolling motor lock will be introduced at the 50th Annual International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades (ICAST), July 11-13 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The new product will be available for viewing at the Johnson Outdoors booth, number 105, at ICAST.

CONCORD, N.H. (NHF&G News)- Hunters who want the chance to take an additional antlerless deer in Wildlife Management Unit M in southeastern New Hampshire during the fall hunting season can buy a special permit from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department starting July 2. Interested hunters can visit http://www.nhfishandgame.com to purchase a permit online; buy a permit from Fish and Game headquarters in Concord; print a mail-in application from the Fish and Game website; or call 603-271-3422 to request an application by mail.

Fish and Game will issue a total of 5,500 permits this year. These permits reflect a long-term objective to reduce deer numbers in this urbanized part of the state.
Unit M permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis and cost $13. Applicants must hold a current New Hampshire hunting or archery license and may buy

(The Outdoor Wire)- Final figures gathered by MassWildlife's five district offices total a record 2,480 birds taken by licensed hunters during the 2007 spring turkey season.

8 turkeys were taken in Barnstable County, 465 in Berkshire County, 79 in Bristol County, 1 in Dukes County (Martha's Vineyard), 88 in Essex County, 425 in Franklin County, 186 towns in Hampden County, 239 in Hampshire County, 157 in Middlesex County, 52 in Norfolk County, 140 in Plymouth County, and 640 in Worcester County.

Last year's spring final total was 2,204. Turkey enthusiasts are reminded they can assist in estimating the fall population of turkeys by reporting turkey broods

Two Killed in Boating Accident Print E-mail

(Northeast Florida Wildlife Commission)- Two Perry, Florida residents were killed Thursday evening in a personal watercraft accident in Crawfordville.

Zoe Stoyer, 46, and Sarah Elise Pomeroy, 14, were being towed on a raft behind a personal watercraft operated by Susan Wells, 55, also of Perry, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials.

Stoyer and Pomeroy were being pulled back toward land when they hit a dock. Stoyer apparently also hit a cypress tree next to the dock, FWC officials said.

WINDHOEK, Namibia (AP)- Namibia's annual seal hunting season started this week, over the protests of animal rights activists who say the practice is cruel

The government accused the activists of "deliberately distorting information," and said controlling the seal population was important for both the fishing industry and to the people who worked in jobs created by the hunt.

The sparsely populated southern African country is famous for its wildlife and desert scenes along its Atlantic coastline, known as the Skeleton Coast. The estimated 850,000 seals live on a group of islands off the southern coast.

Flash Floods Close Maquoketa Caves State Park Print E-mail

MAQUOKETA, IA (IDNR)– A storm that dumped six inches of rain on Maquoketa Caves State Park in Jackson County on Tuesday night has closed portions of the park after the flash flooding.

The main cave, which has a small stream running through it, and approximately half of the trails will be closed at least through Sunday, July 8th until park staff have an opportunity to clean up the damage, said Jerry Reisinger, park supervisor in northeast Iowa.

“At this point, the water is still so high in the cave we haven’t even had a chance to get in and see what damage may have occurred,”
said Reisinger on Wednesday afternoon.
