Erin Conroy, Associated Press
BOSTON— A 50-ton bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan
coast last month had a weapon fragment embedded in its neck that
showed it survived a similar hunt — more than a century ago.
Embedded deep under its blubber was a 3 1/2-inch arrow-shaped
projectile that has given researchers insight into the whale's age,
estimated between 115 and 130 years old.
"No other finding has been this precise,'' said John Bockstoce,
an adjunct curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

(Minnesota DNR)- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding boat
operators to follow safety procedures when refueling their boats. The
reminder follows an accident on Friday, June 15, that injured several
people when a boat exploded after refueling at a gas dock on the
Mississippi River in St. Paul.
"Safety procedures should be
followed any time a boat is being fueled to reduce the chance of a fire
or explosion," said Tim Smalley, DNR boating safety specialist. "A cup
of gasoline is said to have the explosive power of a stick of dynamite,
so fueling safely is a must."

Maryland Restoration Managers To Attempt Laboratory Breeding Of Mature Sturgeon
CAMBRIDGE, MD (The Outdoor Wire)- For the first time ever, scientists are
attempting to breed wild Chesapeake sturgeon in a laboratory setting. A
recently caught mature female sturgeon is the catalyst for what could
be a huge step forward in Chesapeake Bay sturgeon research and
restoration efforts. The 7.5-foot, 170-pound sturgeon, caught by a
commercial fisherman off Tilghman Island, is the first mature female
observed in the Maryland portion of the Bay since 1972.

MIAMI, FL (The Outdoor Wire)- Year after year, hunters master their
performance and demand more from their equipment. Their determination
and skill have challenged Konus to perfect their line of riflescopes,
making them resistant to the most rugged conditions and the ideal
scopes for any and every hunt. Now Konus, makers of the KonusPro
riflescopes with an engraved reticle system, is calling all hunters to
"bring it on!" The Konus Snap-It Guarantee* encourages hunters to put
Konus riflescopes to the ultimate test and see just how impossible it
is to snap the reticle. If the reticle snaps from recoil, the consumer
will be reimbursed 125%. The Konus Snap-It Guarantee will be supported
with a nationwide advertising and direct marketing campaign.
All KonusPro riflescopes are designed with a glass engraved reticle
system in which the reticle is laser-etched onto precision glass rather
than using a thin wire. This eliminates the chances of breaking or
becoming misaligned, as is the case with other scopes.

CONCORD, N.H. (NHF&G News)- To protect the public from the possible consumption of contaminated shellfish, officials from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department have closed the Atlantic coastal waters to the taking of shellfish until further notice. This action is in response to elevated levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning or PSP, commonly known as "red tide," detected in blue mussels collected from the Isles of Shoals and from Hampton/Seabrook Harbor.
