Deer hunters know how important it is to minimize their human scent when hunting, and many scents, soaps, sprays, etc. are sold to help in this effort. However, one of the best ways to reduce human scent is to control body temperature. Hunters who overheat and perspire put out more scent. But hunters who are comfortable or even a little on the cool side don't perspire as much, and their scent imprint is less.

Zebco's CustomZ spinning combos make heads spin

New Tour KVD™ touts 7.3 gear ratio and self-adjusting cast control

New Tour KVD™ touts 7.3 gear ratio and self-adjusting cast control

Professional bass angler Kevin VanDam sets the bar high when it comes to performance expectations, and the newest baitcast reel in the Quantum lineup, Tour KVD, is without a doubt the best ever in the brand's highly popular PT "Performance Tuned" family.

The reel's frame, side covers and front support are machined aluminum. Drive gear and main shaft are ceramic-coated aluminum. Its 11 PT polymer-stainless bearing system provides super-smooth performance and the ultimate in corrosion resistance.

tourkvd The Tour KVD reel is built on a profile not much bigger than Quantum's 100-size baitcasters introduced in 2009, but holds a 200-size spool for increased line capacity, improved casting performance and higher inches per turn (IPT) retrieve ... the best of all worlds. As a result, Tour KVD is classified as a new 150 size and holds 145 yards of 12-pound test, which is 35 more yards than the previous models. From there, things get even better.

Earth shattering is Tour KVD's innovative new cast control, ACS 3. The proprietary Quantum centrifugal braking system automatically self-adjusts according to the needs of the cast up to the maximum level that the angler has selected. For example, if the angler chooses the "midpoint" setting but the cast does not require that much brake actuation, then no brakes will be applied. However, if the cast quickly ramps the spool speed up to need the braking level selected, then the brakes are applied for that setting.

What the ACS 3 technology means is that an angler can change casting presentations, such as going from a long-distance cast immediately to a short pitch, without having to adjust the setting whatsoever. Cast control settings are infinite among the 168-degree rotation of the Tour KVD's external dial.

Also new is Quantum's 7.3:1 extra high-speed gear ratio. At this ratio, Tour KVD has the highest IPT (inches per turn) of any baitcast reel in its class, 34 inches. The reel's handle is made of seven layers of lightweight carbon fiber with large ergonomic paddles. The reel also has the finest drag system and highest lockdown among all freshwater baitcast reels. That's because it is a layered PT ceramic drag system just like the one found in Quantum's proven PT saltwater models.

Tour KVD is available in three right-hand models: Burner XS 7.3:1, Speed SS 6.6:1, and Power 5.4:1. Reel weight is 8.5 ounces. Tour KVD retails for $299.95.

Back to Basics with a Legend

Back to Basics with a Legend

Most likely the very first rod-and-reel combo you held in your tiny hand as a kid was a Zebco spincast outfit. They were easy to handle, allowing you to fling a lure far out into the water in search of the illusive first catch.

chiggerforfishNothing has changed, as generations of anglers continue to be introduced to the rod-and-reel level of fishing with the legendary Zebco line.

The latest entry is a remake of the familiar Zebco 101, yet another great starter rod and reel combo for beginners. That’s because the folks at Zebco have properly matched rod and reel for a variety of light fishing applications, and there’s just nothing easier to use than a push-button Zebco spincast reel.

Here are the particulars of this lightweight, simple combo.
The reel has a 2.7:1 gear ratio and comes pre-spooled with 6-pound test monofilament. The rod is a two-piece, 5-foot. durable Z-glass rod, so the combos fit nicely in small hands. Of course, anglers of all sizes will find the 101 combo to be ideal for dock and pond fishing. Zebco 101 combos are available in red or blue and retail for around $11.99.

As summer winds down and you begin thinking about “back to school” shopping, add a Zebco 101 to the list of must-have items.

Fishing Line Transparency

Fishing Line Transparency

The pros boast virtues of fluorocarbon and superbraid lines, expounding on their hybrid qualities of superior strength, narrow diameter and other factual properties.

chiggerforfishBut what about those plain vanilla folks (like us) who still like to load their reels with a fresh spool of monofilament? Is the "science" of crossbreeding fishing lines making good old fashion "mono" an endangered species on the pegboard of the tackle aisles?

No way, thanks to last week's nationwide retail rollout of Berkley Trilene TransOptic. The line gives back-to-basics anglers a color-changing line sharing the properties of nylon monofilament. Indeed, TransOptic has those mono basics: shock resistance for solid hooksets, limpness for castability, buoyancy for lure control and above all else, knot strength.

TransOptic's true colors shine in and out of the water. Below the surface, the line appears clear and transparent to the vision of a fish. On the flip side, the line changes to a hi-visibility, strikingly apparent gold hue for human eyes.

Line strengths range from 4- to 25-pound test on 220-yard spools. Price is $8.95 to $10.95, depending on test strength.

For line watchers who finesse baits and depend on the slightest movement to detect a strike, TransOptic is a breakthrough product. Even so, if drop shotting with a 1/16-ounce jig at 30 feet isn't your idea of a fun day on the water, then think about one basic quality this line offers. If you'd prefer your eyeball squinting to be confined to this computer screen, then TransOptic is for you. The product tagline says it all: "Anglers see the line. Fish don't."

Weighing the Worm

Weighing the Worm

A recent MOTV poll queried you about the most revolutionary invention in the category of soft plastic bait. The slender, no frills stick worm was hands-down winner.

chiggerforfishImpaled wacky style, hook exposed or Texas rigged, the versatile soft stick worm has proven deadly since its birth in the last decade. One challenge with the rig has traditionally been making effective, long-range casts with a worm typically fished sans lead weight.

The ingenious scientists at Berkley have come up with the solution, in the form of the new Berkley PowerBait Heavy Weight Fat SinkWorm and a lighter cousin, the PowerBait Heavy Weight Sink Worm.

An added benefit of making longer casts, sometimes necessary in clear water, is the weighted formula allows the bait to sink faster than conventional baits, and with an action that will entice the most stubborn fish.

Our field tests (yes, we did play hooky from the office) revealed yet another asset to this simplistic yet highly productive worm. The added weight also allows the angler to impart more action in the worm, due to its weight, making it dart sharper and more directly with a snap of the wrist.

The design claims hold true about the worm sending suspended and spooked fish over the edge. We used ours solo and as a backup bait for missed topwater strikes. Again, the added casting distance due to the weighted worm factor came in handy more than once.

With exclusive PowerBait scent and flavor, fish hold on 18 times longer for more positive hook sets. The Heavy Weights Fat SinkWorm is available in 10 popular bass-attracting colors to match any water condition.

Heavy Weights are 125 percent more tear resistant and cast farther than similar baits. The Fat SinkWorm has a heavier profile than its counterpart the SinkWorm. The PowerBait Heavy Weights MSRP is $5.99.
