In viewing the Special-Purpose Cruiser category, BOTY judges were asked to look at how well very different boats met the design intent of each builder. This apples-to-oranges-to-melons comparison isn't easy, but, hey, that's why our pros get paid the big bucks. So off to work they went, and when the fruit salad was complete, our panel agreed that the Moorings 43.3 best serves the purpose for which it was built: chartering. Chartering puts specific demands on a sailboat.

A Hunter You Can Ski Behind

Here, deep in the dog days of summer, there must be some tired pups wagging their lay-up rollers around boatyards. With the fall boat shows approaching, new boat announcements from near and far continue to pour in. Close to home, well, in North America, at least, Hunter Marine has officially replied to the question people have been asking for weeks: Water skiing anyone? The Florida builder has just released details about the Edge, the latest creation from Glenn Henderson and his design team. Firing a salvo directly amidships at McGregor, maker of the McGregor trailer sailer, Hunter unveils a 26-foot trailerable that will get up and go, thanks to its 3-cylinder, 75-horse Evinrude outboard.

Good Value in a Versatile Cruiser

Comfortable and stylish belowdecks and well organized topsides, the Beneteau 40 showed light-air performance on the waters off Annapolis last fall that hinted at good handling in a stiffer breeze and convinced the BOTY judges that this boat was a standout among the Midsize Cruisers. The 40 is the latest in a line of new production cruisers from Beneteau. Its hull is straight from the drawing boards of Berret Racoupeau and features a fine entry, what BOTY judge Steve Callahan described as broad shoulders, and a fairly beamy transom under a wide cockpit and twin wheels.
