Find Late Winter Largemouth on Flats
Two things are required to catch fish: using the right bait in the right spot. Pro angler Kevin VanDam says this is certainly true for late winter bass.
VanDam says cold water fish have a special affinity for the flat-sided, tight-wobbling lures categorically referred to as lipless crankbaits. But he emphasizes that you don’t just cast-and-reel these baits. Instead, you allow them to sink to the bottom, and you retrieve them slowly, bumping into stumps and grass and other cover that’s present.
As for fishing locations, he focuses on high-percentage spots on big shallow flats.
“A lot of people are hoping to be able to go up and wander up and down these big flats and catch fish,” he says. “This time of year, the bass are still very structure related. Even when they’re in the shallows, they’re going to be related to some type of depth change. When you do catch a bass GPS that spot, because they are there for a reason. That will help you find more places just like that.”
