Carolina Rigging for Largemouth

April can be a confusing month for bass fishermen. Depending on where you fish and local conditions, bass can be in the pre-spawn, spawning or post-spawn mode. This means it can be hard to figure out what you have to do to catch bass, and where you have to do it.

largemouth"No worry," says pro angler Mark Davis of Arkansas. When this former Bass Masters Classic winner is confronted with a perplexing situation in terms of what the fish are doing, he reverts to his tried-and-true technique that will work in any of the above situations.

He explains, "Everyone goes fishing in April. In mean, this is the one month when everybody comes out, north to south and east to west. So bass fishing waters get a lot of pressure."

He continues, "I really like to fish with a Carolina rig in the month of April, and here's why. It works for fish that are in the pre-spawn, spawning or post-spawn. It's effective in all stages of the spawn, so it takes the guesswork out of whether or not I'm doing something that'll produce.

"Now some of those pre-spawn fish will still be deep, and a Carolina rig is great on deep structure. I can also catch fish with it when they're up on the spawning flats. And I can catch them when they're coming back out from the flats after they've laid their eggs. So this is a technique that has the potential to catch fish in the spring regardless of where you use it."

Davis adds that his favorite lures for Carolina-rig fishing are 6-inch lizards, small "creature baits" and finesse worms. He rigs with a longer leader in clear water and a shorter leader in dingy water. In the latter case he says the heavy sinker dragging on the bottom is what actually attracts the bass' attention, so he wants his lure following closely behind.

Davis concludes, "This isn't the most exciting way to fish for bass, but it's pretty consistent. I don't really care how my bites come as long as they do come. That's the important thing."

I am one of those guys that doesn't like to finess fishing, especially when I am compete in a tournament. I just want to power fish and cover as much as ground as I can. But there are those times when I realize that power fishing ain't going to get me into 1st place when fish are not hitting.
It's true that finess fish most of the time(for me especially), can be very boring. But if you can find the patient in you and master finess fishing, you will find it hard to not be in the top.
