Trees and Homework for Whitetails (Video Included)
According to Outdoor Answer’s Jim Carbaugh, doing your homework before climbing a tree can take out some of the work, when it comes time to hang the stand. Watch his video and then read below about the details.
“These days a climber tree-stand can be found in almost every outdoorsman repertoire giving them a real edge on the game,” he says. However, pre-hunting preparation is necessary to get the most out of your climber.”"Start by scouting the hunting area for ideal trees to place your stand. The tree's diameter must be small enough to fit the climber, but sturdy enough to hold your weight. Your choice of timber should also be located near the game. Look for warm trails that intersect or lead to water, food, or bedding spots.”
“Once a tree has been selected, climb it. Identify the settings of your tree-stand prior to opening day. If you plan on hunting several locations, map each of them out and write down all the stand settings for each tree.
Third, mark the trail into and out of your tree stand position. Select the path that is least restrictive but does not interfere with the game. A good game plan goes a long way on hunting day!”
