The Gag Grouper is one of the most prized groupers by anglers. The Gag inhabits shallow coastal waters and offshore at depths of up to 500 feet. They can reach weights up to 500 pounds. The Gag Grouper is recognized by its brownish gray in color with dark worm-like markings on sides; strong serrated spur at bottom margin of preopercle; fins dark, with anal and caudal having white margin.
