Wearing Wool
Hal Blood is a legend in the north Maine woods. He's a registered master guide, and he makes his full-time living guiding for bear, moose, deer and other game. If anybody knows what works and what doesn't work in the outdoors, it's this man.
Blood is widely known as one of the best woodsmen in the Northeast. He guides for a variety of game. One of his favorite things to do is to track whitetail bucks in a fresh snow. He told me that he's followed a track as far as 15 miles in mountainous north Maine terrain.
When it comes to clothing, Blood is a big proponent of wool clothes, and here's why he prefers this natural fabric to synthetics.
"The main reason is wool is warm when it's wet," he says. "We have a lot of snow and damp weather in November, if you're out all day you have to be comfortable. Another reason is its quiet. Quiet, it's a natural fiber. Its very comfortable, it airs out good, and it won't hold an odor."
