Trees and Strings (Video Included)

Outdoor Answer: According to Outdoor Answer’s Jim Carbaugh, there are more to strings than stringing up a bow. Watch his video and then read below about the details. .

“The mathematical approach to hunting in a tree stand can get very complex. Such formulas as Pythagoras Theorem are needed to accurately judge distances and adjust for angles,” he says. “This leads many outdoorsman to ask, is there an easier way? For an accurate judgment without equations, you’ll need some string, a tape measure, and tape.”

“The string lengths should equal the distance you are comfortable hunting, perhaps 30 yards or so. Place a piece of tape 2 yards in from side of the string then continue placing tape at 10 yard increments until you reach the end of the line.”

“Take the string up the tree and tie it around at chest height, using the two yard mark-in. Make sure the tree stand is at the height you plan to hunt. Go back down to the ground, stretch out the string, and simply mark out several reference points using the tape to identify the distances. Do not include the two yard leader, in the measurements. Take the guess work out of the equation.”
