Use a Fall Call in the Spring for Gobblers

While most turkey hunters only use a young gobbler's squealing call, the "kee-kee" run, in the fall, it also can be very effective in the spring. Many times, an unexpected call can bring in a gobbler when nothing else can.

turkeyThe high pitch of the kee-kee run may be enough on its own to trigger a gobble. Because the kee kee is a distress call, a tom turkey may come to investigate the noise and see what's happening to cause such a fuss. This call is given by a young turkey and can trigger a mothering response in nearby hens. When the hens from an older gobbler's harem respond to the kee-kee run, they'll usually bring the gobbler with them.

What many hunters don't realize is that young hens also make the kee-kee run. The gobbler may believe that the call is coming from a young hen, and he may move in quickly-wanting to mate her and add her to his harem. On occasion, even old gobblers will kee-kee.
