Wade's World Hunting: One of the only downsides to spring turkey hunting is ticks, and as the weather warms, these little bloodsuckers become more numerous and more active. Hunters should take precautions against ticks because they carry two dangerous diseases: Lyme’s disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Here’s the best way to protect against them. Purchase a can of Coulston’s Duranon Tick Repellent, a spray that contains the active ingredient Permethrin. This product can be purchased at outdoor stores, farm co-op stores, garden centers and other outdoor-related businesses. Or, this spray can also be purchased online: Google “Coulston’s Duranon Tick Repellent” to place an order ($6.99 per can).
Before hunting, spray this repellent around the pants cuffs, waist, wrists and button line – anywhere a tick can penetrate clothing to get to skin. It is not harmful to humans, but it kills or repels ticks that come in contact with it.
The expense in obtaining this tick repellent is small and the effort in using it is minimal. This is great insurance against encountering an infected tick and risking serious illness. It’s a precaution all turkey hunters should take each time they head afield.
