Roosting Interception (Video Included)

Wade's World Hunting: Scenario: It’s late afternoon, close to time for wild turkeys to fly up to roost. You know the area where a gobbler has been roosting. What’s the best strategy for intercepting him and calling him into shotgun range as he makes his way to his “bedroom?”

  • Slip quietly into the roost area about an hour before fly up time. If possible, come in from the direction opposite where you think the gobbler should be to lessen the chance of spooking him. (If the gobbler is roosting near a field, he’s likely in or around the field, so slip in from the opposite direction.)
  • Set up between the roost area and where you think the gobbler is. Set up close to the roost area – 50-60 yards is ideal.
  • Call with a series of low volume yelps, clucks and purrs. Make a short calling sequence every 10 minutes.
  • If a gobbler answers, don’t call back immediately. Your silence will build his impatience and curiosity.
  • Watch carefully, as he is likely to slip in silently looking for the “hen.”
  • If the gobbler doesn’t come, but he flies up to roost close by, wait until full dark to slip out, then come back the next morning to set up where the gobbler will fly down.
