A uniquely effective call made from a single piece of wood...

Field Edge Gobbler (Video Included)

Wade's World Hunting: Scenario: One or more wild turkey gobblers have been roosting in a woods just off the edge of a field. At dawn, their pattern has been to fly into the field and strut until their hens show up. How do you maneuver, where do you set up and how do you call to lure these gobblers in when they leave their roost?

  • Arrive on site very early, well before any hint of dawn comes.
  • Slip around the edge of the field in total darkness (no flashlights!) to position yourself directly between where you think the gobblers are and where they should enter the field.
  • Sit down at the edge of the woods, back to a tree, facing the field. Pick a spot where you have a clear range of fire toward the field.
  • Wait for the gobblers to gobble on their own. Then, when day begins to dawn, make some “tree talk” (quiet hen yelps) to get the gobblers’ attention. (If live hens are yelping, imitate their calls. If they get excited, do the same.
  • When you’re sure one or more gobblers has answered you, quit calling and get ready to shoot. Chances are good one will fly into the field, land within range and begin strutting. Cluck once to make him relax his strut and raise his head, then shoot!
