Work Out Elk
So you’ve got an elk hunt planned for this fall, and you’re getting everything ready. Are you getting yourself ready? Elk guide Al Morris says being in good physical shape is one of the most important things any hunter can do to prepare for a western high country hunt.
“If you know you’re going to go elk hunting, you’ve got to get yourself in the best shape you can possibly get yourself into,” advises the veteran guide. “Cut down on the cheeseburgers, and instead of taking the elevator, use the stairs. Wear your pack, boots and get out there in some hot weather. Do the roadwork and it will pay big dividends when you get out West.”
He continues, “When you get there, drink plenty of water. Not being properly hydrated is beyond doubt the top reason people get altitude sickness. Your heart is really working overtime, as soon as you go from zero or 3,000 to over 7000 feet, your blood count will double its amount of red blood cells. To compensate for the altitude requires drinking lots of water. If you will drink tons of water, thin your blood a little, take a few aspirin, that’ll get you over the hump.”
He concludes, “It takes your body about three days to acclimate. Some guys like to come out a few days early, do some sight-seeing, just hangout, try to get their bodies adjusted to the altitude.”
