Still Hunting Whitetails

Still-hunting is a method of hunting where you walk and look for game. If you’re doing it right, you’re stopping and looking more and walking less. Whitetail deer expert Larry Weishuhn says he used to be a fast-walker, and it took back surgery to slow him down to the point where he was still-hunting correctly.

Weishuhn is well known for his hunting skills, and one of his preferred methods is still-hunting, where he walks slowly through his hunting territory while continuously watching for game.

“In years past, I was walking so fast I’d be spooking animals or maybe not seeing them when we were jumping by or maybe just walking right past them,” he says. “As a result of my back and injury and surgery, now I’m having to walk a lot slower, a lot of times with a cane on harder ground. It’s causing to me to spend a little bit more time looking and really paying attention to what I’m seeing. Where I’m walking and really paying a lot more attention than I did in the past.”
