Outfitter Tips for Elk
Elk numbers are higher now in North America than ever before in modern history. This is a great time to book an elk hunt, but if you’re planning to go, advanced planning is an asset for a successful trip.
J. Dart of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in Missoula, Montana, is an expert on planning for a trip. Take his advice and you’ll have a memorable trip. “I would begin planning and booking the hunt one year ahead of time, especially in states like Montana when you have to apply for a tag,” he says.
He continues, “ Colorado is one of the only states where you can buy an over the counter tag. If you’re looking for meat in your freezer, Colorado is the place to go. It’s an experience worth planning for. I highly encourage you to go with an outfitter. If you’re a first time elk hunter, I think you’ll enjoy the experience more if you’re with someone that knows the country and really understand elk hunting. You’ll fall in love with elk country.”
