DIY Elk Hunt
Western elk are thriving. Herds of these animals are expanding in many states, and there’s more hunting opportunity now than ever before.
Elk guide Al Morris says permits in some states are hard to come by, but in Colorado, you can drive out, buy a tag and hunt public land with a fair expectation of success.
“You have to do your homework,” he says. “You have to call the biologists. Or if you’re going to hunt with an outfitter contact customers who had successful hunts with the guide to get their advice.
Surfing the Web and researching from the Internet is another useful research tip.
“You can get on Google Earth and see the exact wallow that you want to hunt an elk from on public land,” he says. “It’s the lazy guy that’s going to get burned. The guy that does his research and gets on the computer and gets on the phone line, and burns those down is going to learn a good area to go find him an elk out West.”
