Early Season Gobbler (Video Included)
Wade's World Hunting: Scenario: It’s early in the season, before the leaves have budded out, and the woods are wide open. A wild turkey is gobbling, and you move in to set up. However, since visibility is so good, you have to be careful not to be seen. How do you maneuver on such a bird, and how do you set up for the best chance of calling him into gun range?
- Use the roll of the terrain to your advantage. Stay behind ridges and rises as you maneuver close to the gobbler. He can’t see through dirt!
- Don’t call as you approach. You don’t want to alert the gobbler to be watching in your direction.
- Slip in as close as you can without risking being seen. /Setting up just over a rise from where a turkey is gobbling is ideal.
- When setting up, sit against a tree that’s within shotgun range of where the gobbler must come to look for the “hen.” In other words, when he tops the rise for a look, he’s close enough to shoot.
- If possible, sit against a tree that has another tree in front of you to screen your body. (Make sure the second tree is far enough away so you can move your shotgun side-to-side, depending on where the gobbler appears.)
- Don’t call until you’re set up and ready. Then cluck and/or yelp quietly. If the gobbler answers, put the call away and get ready to shoot.
