Consistently connecting with these birds brings great satisfaction for those who develop this skill. Following are tips for improving your ratio of hits to misses.

First, choose a gun that fits comfortably and shoulders naturally. For a few dollars a qualified gunsmith can fit a shotgun (alter the stock) specifically to a shooter’s measurements.

Practice mounting the shotgun by pointing it straight-on into a mirror. Do several repetitions several days in a row. This builds muscle memory for mounting the shotgun and makes this movement instinctive and fluid.

When a bird flushes or flies into range, don’t hurry! Too many bird hunters rush their shots. Instead, take your time in mounting the shotgun and acquiring the target.

Focus on the bird’s eye. This concentrates your attention on the front of the target instead of the tail. Then, as the bird moves, track it with your shotgun like you’d follow it with your index finger.

Don’t worry about lead. Instead, allow your instincts and your internal computer to take over. Just focus, follow and fire, and keep the gun barrel moving as the bird drops.

As in other athletic undertakings, practice makes perfect. Shooting clay targets will help you develop the right sight picture and feel with your shotgun. hoot as often as possible and follow the above tips, and soon your number of hits should rise noticeably.
