Find fish fast with the three P’s

Trout are virtually invisible underwater, and often we're outsmarted by these critters with pea-sized brains. That's why it's called fishing, not catching. It helps if you start in the right place.

Find trout and boost your fishing chances by looking for the "Three P's": Protection, provisions, and proboscis.

Protection, from strong current and overhead predators. Rocks, logs, deeper water, tree branches, etc. Glimmering, riffly water appears solid to a trout as well, which is why they are often found feeding among the softball-sized rocks of a gravel bar.

Provisions, food washed toward the trout by a gentle current or past the fish resting in calm water. Millions of generations ago, trout figured out that efficiency is the name of the feeding game. They can't expend a lot of energy chasing each morsel; they'd rather fin quietly and let the grub come to them.

Proboscis (sorry!) is the Latin word for nose. Fish need oxygen in liquid form, and they get it from clean running water. Look for them in and near current. The warmer the water, the less dissolved oxygen, so trout seek riffles, little waterfalls and other frothy, foamy hideouts. So should you.
