Classic Baits: Twin Spin Spinnerbait
Wade's World Fishing: Most spinnerbaits are made in the safety-pin design, with one wire arm extending over the body and hook. This single arm typically has one or two spinning blades of various designs and sizes. These lures are deadly bass catchers in a variety of situations and settings.
However, twin-spin spinnerbaits are equally effective – or more so, especially when bass are schooled on deep structure. As their name implies, these spinnerbaits have two offset wire arms with spinning blades instead of one. Thus, they offer double the flash, vibration and noise of the one-armed variety.
Twin-spin spinnerbaits were popularized years ago by the famous Shannon Twin-Spin. Today these twin-spinners are making a comeback as more anglers realize they have never lost their special appeal to bass.
One good source for twin-spin spinnerbaits is the War Eagle Lure Co. in Arkansas: www.wareaglelures.com.
War Eagle offers twin-spin spinnerbaits in 3 sizes and 14 colors.
Here are tips for using twin-spin spinnerbaits on summertime bass.
- Use twin-spin spinnerbaits on ledges, roadbeds, deep points and other structure where bass gang up in the summer.
- The ¾-ounce model is the most popular size.
- Rig a twin-spin with a soft plastic twin-tail grub trailer.
- Make a long cast, and let the bait sink to bottom. Reel up slack, then sweep the rod sideways to swim the bait over structure. Allow the bait to sink back to bottom, then repeat this sweep/reel retrieve back to the boat.
