The walking sinker attracts the fish along the bottom...
Slip Sinker Tactic (Video Included)
Wade's World Fishing: The slip sinker rig is designed to slowly crawl live bait along breaklines, rock reefs, humps or other fish-holding bottom structure. It is primarily fished on light spinning tackle to catch walleye, though it will also work on perch, catfish, bluegill and other species. Bait with nightcrawlers, minnows or leeches, depending on target species.
Following are tips for fishing the slip sinker rig.
- The standard way to fish this rig is by trolling with an electric motor. However, this rig may also be front-trolled or cast out and slowly reeled back to the rodtip.
- Use a light or medium/light spinning rod (at least 6 1/2 feet) with a sensitive tip. Spool with 6- or 8-pound test monofilament line.
- Cast the slip sinker rig behind the boat, keep the bail open, and allow the rig to fall freely to the bottom. Then catch and hold the line with the index finger (reel bail remains open) and begin the trolling run.
- The deeper the water, the more line you need out behind the boat.
- Inch slowly along the structure. Use the lightest weight possible to keep the rig/bait on bottom.
- When a bite is detected, quickly let go of the line so the fish won’t feel unnatural pressure.
- Wait a few seconds, then close the bail, reel up slack and feel for fish on the end of your line. If the fish is still holding the bait, set the hook with a sideways sweeping motion with the rod.
