Try this easy automatic reel for yo-yo fishing...

Mechanical Yo-Yo Tactic (Video Included)

Wade's World Fishing: A fishing yo-yo is a spring-loaded metal reel that is rigged, baited and left in place for fish to find the bait. When they bite, the spring-loaded trigger trips, and an inertial reel sets the hook and keeps pressure on the fighting fish.

One special note: before using mechanical yo-yos, check local fishing regulations to see if there are any restrictions prohibiting or limiting their use. Following are tips for fishing with mechanical yo-yos.

  • Look for spots where limbs or bushes overhang water that is at least 3 feet deep. These may be along the bank or on trees/bushes growing in the water.
  • Tie yo-yos to limbs so each yo-yo is dangling beneath the limb and above the water.
  • Pull out enough line from the yo-yo to dangle the bait a couple of feet into the water.
  • Set the mechanical trigger to hold line at desired depth.
  • Bait the line and then drop the line into the water.
  • Set several yo-yos, perhaps experimenting with different areas to see where fish are biting best.
  • Set the yo-yos in late afternoon and then run before bedtime and again at sunrise. Reb-ait as necessary.
  • Take a stout landing net when you run yo-yos to help land fish.
  • Remove yo-yos when you’re through fishing.
