Bream Killer Tactic (Video Included)
Wade's World Fishing: Bream Killer is the proper name of a fly fishing rig used to catch bluegill and small bass. It consists of a floating popping bug trailed by a length of monofilament leader and a sinking Bream Killer fly. This presentation is deadly on bluegill and other panfish that feed near the surface.
Sometimes the fish prefer the popper. Other times they prefer the Bream Killer. (Bream Killers are sold through Bream Bugs, 15692 Summer Lake Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63017-5136 www.breambugs.com) Following are tips for fishing with the “Bream Killer” rig.
- Fly cast the popping bug and Bream Killer trailer over bluegill spawning beds, around shallow cover, and along shoreline where mayflies are swarming.
- Use a mid-weight fly rod (No. 5-7) and a floating fly line.
- Twitch the rod tip to “pop” the popping bug. As the popping bug is worked on the surface the sinking fly trails behind just underwater.
- Bluegill is a school fish. Many times bites will come on both baits simultaneously. When one fish is hooked, allow that fish to struggle in place momentarily to see if another will bite the other popper/fly.
