Hunter Misses Deer, Hits Man Shoveling Snow
A New York hunter who missed his deer but caused minor injuries to a man outside shoveling snow now faces criminal charges.

Augustin Iannello, 43, of LeRoy, N.Y., is charged with reckless endangerment, assault and discharging a firearm across a highway, said state Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Law Enforcement Capt. Michael Van Durme. All charges are misdemeanors.
Van Durme said Iannello was in a tree stand in woods near Randall Road in LeRoy on Saturday when he fired his 12-gauge shotgun at deer that entered a field of cut corn. The field was between the woods and Randall Road, where there are a number of residences. Van Durme said Iannello's shot traveled more than 1,000 feet, crossed the road and struck a man outside shoveling snow in his driveway.
"He was struck in the back of the knee," said Van Durme. "Fortunately, the shot was at such a distance that the slug didn't penetrate his clothing, but it did cause bruising and bleeding and a fair amount of pain."
Firing shots that cross a roadway is a violation of state environmental conservation law, said Van Durme.
Iannello "never should have fired a round in that direction," said Van Durme. "One of the most basic rules of firearm handling is to know your target and what is beyond it. You never discharge a firearm unless you are sure if you hit or miss your target, that the backstop is going to be safe."
Iannello will appear in LeRoy Town Court on Dec. 27, said Van Durme.
