Building the Ultimate Fishing Lure
Canadian Charlie White analyzed game fish behavior by literally trolling a camera behind his boat, along with hundreds of different lures. His research shows four primary factors that turn on a tuna or bedazzle a bass:
1. It should be shaped like the natural bait fish of the area.
2. It should behave like a wounded fish, wiggling and wobbling.
3. It should create a sonic vibration, a universal signal that attracts albacore and wake up a walleye.
4. White says a forked tail is the fourth factor. .
If you follow the professional angling circuits, you'll see most trophies handed to the guys who used baits with several of the above characteristics. They'll often change the dominant factor to meet current water and weather conditions, but still stick to these basic guidelines.
So should you. Add up the characteristics of a good lure and then head for the tackle shop. There's a bazillion choices but only a few meet all four criteria. And don't forget your checkbook.
