Weathering Elk
Early October is something of a transition time for elk and elk hunters. The weather can be mild – sometimes too warm – or it can be cold and snowy when an early winter storm moves in.
Professional outfitter P. J. DelHomme says weather plays a major role in elk activity, in whether or not hunters should head to the woods. He’s a big believer in factoring weather into your decision to go into the woods or not.
“My personal experience is if you have a warm spell, they’re basically going to shut up and hunker down,” he says. “They’re going to move around when it’s cooler, at night. We get a lot of questions about how hot is too hot to hunt an elk.
You’ve got to ask yourself, are you going to be able to get that animal out before that meat spoils? You don’t want to shoot that animal just because it’s got big antlers. You want to make sure you harvest that animal and get all the usable meat. You’ve got to ask yourself, what’s too hot? And know where they are, when the temperature cools down.
