Warm Weather Elk

When the weather’s warm, elk feed more at night and bed down for most of the day. This means hunting is normally difficult during a warm period, but there are some tricks you might try to get up close and personal with a big bull.

elkProfessional outfitter P. J. DelHomme is a firm believer in how warm weather affects elk movements. He observes when a warm spell hits, elk feed mostly at night and bed up in daylight hours. This means an early wakeup for hunters who want to take advantage of the best time of the day to be hunting.

“The key is get up at the crack of dawn and get up early when the elk are still moving around, and they’re still safe,” he says. They still feel kind of spunky and are looking for a place to bed. They’re going to hunker down there all day and you’re not going to see them unless you walk on top of them.”

He continues, “When bull elk are displaying their dominance, they like to take it out on little trees. You can actually call in bulls that way. You can take a stick and give it a good whack and rub it up and down. The bulls will hear that and they’ll think it’s another bull and they’ll usually come running in.”
