Calling All Elk
To call in a bull elk, you’ve got to not be shy, says veteran elk guide Al Morris. He says many hunters are too tentative with their call. They don’t call enough. This veteran caller says you’ve got to send a bull an invitation if you want him to come to the party.
Morris, of the Hunter’s Specialties pro staff, says many hunters are too careful about not overcalling a bull elk, and in the process, they don’t call enough. He says you can overcall, or call poorly, but you can’t be afraid of trying.
“If you will go and out and learn proficiency with a Mac Daddy elk call, it really sounds like an elk and that’s an advantage,” he says. “If you want to call in an elk, you’ve got to be calling with that call.”
He continues, “I think people make the mistake of not blowing enough on the call. You’re going to spook animals if you blow too much. I may do that five times in a row before I have that one bull that turns around comes right at me. That’s one I’m looking for, and I can’t call him in unless I’m calling.”
New York man attacked in own backyard said he thought angry deer "wanted to kill me."
