Improving Success (Video Included)

Wade Bourne: Fishermen never "learn it all." There's always some new concept, technique or tip that will help you enjoy more success in this hook-and-line sport.

This is why anglers should continually work at becoming better. They should map out a strategy for honing their fishing skills and knowledge, then put this plan into action. Here are some suggestions for doing this.

Become a better caster. Anglers who can cast their lures to tight targets will catch more fish than those who are inaccurate with their casts. Buy a practice plug or remove the hooks from a real fishing lure, and practice casting to a bucket, a hula hoop or similar object in your backyard. A few minutes of practice a couple of times a week will make a big difference in hitting those precise on-water targets.

Attend fishing seminars, and ask questions of the experts. Make a list of questions before you go so you'll get help in solving your specific fishing shortcomings.

Go fishing with a guide. When you go, tell him you want him to instruct you on how to become a better angler. This investment will be money well spent in improving your fishing proficiency.

Fish in a tournament. You don't have to be a pro to fish with an expert in a small, local event. First thing in the morning tell him you're in the tournament to learn, and you will not impede his efforts to compete. Then watch how he fishes and jot down tips that you can put into practice.

Join a fishing club. Study books, magazines and fishing videos. Brainstorm other ways to become better at fishing.

Here's the point: fishing is like any other sport in that it's an endeavor of skill, and you've got to work at it to get better. Take the nonchalant route, and your catches will probably continue to be mediocre. But work stridently to improve and chances are you'll see quick results in terms of more bites, more fish and more fun.
